The Real Score
{ in cricket big Test innings but real score is matter for the critics }

Virender Sehwag’s 309 there at Multan in Pakistan vs Pak is considered one of the greatest Test innings . It is the amplest innings from india but in the top ten merit rank list of india”s batting sky , it rests at number 8 not at number one . VVS Laxman’s 281 knock is measured at number one in the rank. For great innings’ measurement the critics view out whole scenarios and by micro evaluation they measure the rank of the best innings. As a critic I too have my measure for the big Test innings . V. Sehwag’s triple hundred is buzzed a lot . Indeed that was a magnificent innings but we can say it was Sehwag’s day and since the start he was in a great flow to have different mood for which he was known . Why he met a great feat of 309 because it was Sehwag’s particular day …. and was very much destined for the feat. It is so because on that day he got two lives or chances that were missed out by the Pakistani fielders . Among them two chances were so nearer or easier but he was dropped . At first his catch was missing by Salim Yusuf of Soyab Akhtar at 49 and later on 53 of Saqulen Mustaq and then after double hundred by Yusuf Khan . In this way his real score is 49 only.
If you are as a fan the live watcher of the game you know the reality of the ground. And in modern technological device era through technology I mean through video clip can see or know the reality that what happened in the ground . V Sehwag was given chances by the Pak fielders so he reached at the feat . In it there is no fault of the batsman. But it is sure there was God’s grace or brilliant luck that the catch chances were not endorsed out by the fielders and due have it the bowlers got frustration and wandered from their line , length and stinginess too . If the fielders drop any catch the bowler gets so angry and curses out his luck. We know in cricket only one chance is enough for the batsman. We know that the batsman hasn’t opened his account and he is dropped by the fielder and then that batsman made double century. Thus the batsman who deserved zero read double hundred and the score reveals his glory. In this reference i extract a worthy example that in a Ranji Match ( Bombay vs Rajasthan) Sunny Gavaskar was dropped by fielder Hanwant Singh and after that Sunny made double hundred by endorsing the great opportunity and due to that innings he was selected for the national team to tour West Indies and since then history is scripted by S Gavaskar. Here one point is needed to mind if S Gavaskar would be caught out then his score was read zero and if the selectors would make that innings the base for selection then Sunny wouldn’t be selected at the national level and might be his career would ruin out or he had to struggle more but we can say Almighty was so graceful on Sunny on that day and the delivery so luck work on its way that Sunny endorsed out the golden chance . We know the bowler doesn’t get chance twice and twice. The bowler can just bowl and bowl and he can’t bet that he will make out the batsman in this delivery. Yes he can claim but chance is zero percent of success there. We have seen that the tail ender batsmen often perplex even big bowlers. And the batsman too can claim that he would hit century ,six ,four but not sure . Yes batsman,bowler ,fielder can make effort dieheartedly but success is decided only by Him.Yes for the task the batsman or bowler needs
confidence but needs bit luck for success ,it is sure . No doubt you are so quality master class batsman and ferocious , accurate bowler but for success you need luck. Sometimes batsman ( bowler in real ) like Balvinder Singh Sandhu makes 68 run against for monsters why because he a David then .
See Sachin missed out a feat because his captain R Dravid declared when he was just 6 run short to reach double hundred there in Multan where Sehwag slammed splndid triple ton but situation didn’t allow the captain and he compelled to declare the innings for winning sake rather than Sachin’s double hundred . So illluck play its role though india registered a huge victory there.

And Sachin’s that innings was chancelss but it isn’t got place in the top bestest Test innings’ merit rank of india while Rahul Dravid’s 180 in the home ground there at Colcotta is rated in the best ten innings from india’s cricket’s batting world .

281 run’s innings of VVS Laxman is evaluated as the best Test Innings of India and rests 5 th best in the world . Why because of india’ s shattering and crucial situation VVS Laxman brought back india in the game by playing huge knock.
India was called for follow on and VVS Laxman played pivotal role and Rahul Dravid anchored formidably. Indeed by follow on india not retreated the huge lead but got huge lead and thrashed back Australia that it bundled out like playcards’ heap due to brilliant bowling of indian bowlers particularly spinner Harbhajan Singh. It was bowling of Harbhajan that awarded great victory . If Bhajji couldn’t bowl well there then the great effort of Laxman-Dravid gone futile.Though on the day 5th the wicket had gone turny and cracky that the batting was gone tougher and the Australians are weaker in facing or playing spin bowling perticulary on the indian soil and they did trap in that turny wicket and collapsed bitterly. Why because the bowler just needed to deliver the ball and the wicket was playing there . India got win there so the innings of VVS Laxman is counted as one of the biggest or the greatest innings . But the point is to mind that Harbhajan Singh ‘s that bowling feat isn’t counted in the best ten spells or bowling figures.
Why because the wicket was turned bowling friendly and the bowlers did not have wage a lot.

See Sunny Gavaskar’s 221 against England in England isn’t counted as the greatest because india could not win the match by a petty margin.
What was Sunny Gavaskar’s fault in that, that the team couldn’t get victory. But at that point when Gavaskar left india was in a solid winning position.At that crucial stage Sunny offered his wicket gently and after that india couldn’t get only 40 runs while 6 wickets were in the hands. If Sunny would stay a bit and awarded victory single-handedly by getting that required marginal runs then his innings would be measured as one of the greatest innings of cricket History. So it is amazing that the batsman’s innings and effort did not count and only the result is the criteria kept to count the greatness by the expert to measure the greatness of the innings.

In Madras the then now Chennai where Sachin Tendulkar played a magnificent and compact innings of 136 against the best bowling attack of Pakistan. But alas india lost that match only by12 runs . Sachin couldn’t stay up to the victory same as S Gavaskar and in 6 runs india lost out 3 wickets and Pak won that match by 12 runs. And due to disputed criteria his great innings of 136 runs isn’t placed in the best innings’ rank or all time great Test innings .

See great Mahabharat in which Bhishma, Dron , Ashwasthama ,Karna , Duryodhan, Jayadrath ,Dhrustdhmn , Abhimanyu were great and brave warrior and their party lost and win the war but their individual great bravery isn’t counted lesser in the warship world or History.

What I conclude through this historic revelation , yes to give merit and rank these kinds of query must be counted or attended …..I mean win or loss doesn’t mean why because it is the part of the game and in this matter the particular feat of the individual performance shouldn’t be underestimated or overlooked by the statisticians ,experts , analysts and evaluationists.

No doubt V Sehwag was a big batsman and being opener his figures are envious . He had played two triple innings, in it the innings he played there at Ahmedabad against South Africa 319 was chanceless and 293 against Shree Lanka was also scintillating innings.But the innings of Multan which is ranked number 6 th in the india’s best 10 rank in which he was in a great blow and flow but he got three big chances in that huge innings though he wasn’t guilty for that but he got grace of Him so he is less accredited for the innings than the luck.
Sehwag was a fearless batsman and hitting and hitting in his own way was his religion and didn’t care about cricket pandits’ criticize or dogma text book or he is dropped and dropped no way he would get any tension.Despite rough batting nature he has 22 hundred on his worthy name is saluted . In his freelance batting the predecessors like Sachin Sourabh ,Rahul,Laxman were solid to handle the situation so they played vital role indirectly behind his grand success.Only due to those mr reliables he could play all freely and boldly . So his record seems wonderful but consistency deficiency can be observed in his battihg career.

*The best 10 Test innings of india adjudged by mr X…….that has inspired me to write this article.

*The evaluation has made by whom is his own stands or criteria or his measurements. In this subject each cricket fan, expert, critic, veteran, cricketer ,media sportsperson, analyst has its own view. And to be nod or object is fan’s natural right .
Here I too have my own atitude to measure out the ten greatest Test innings of india but before it I mentioned the rank list that has viewed out by some expert , that is–

Why I ranked these innings the best , in this regard the analysis of these innings is—
Out of 10 four best Test innings are of SM Gavaskar ….Why …It is so because to bat at the opening slot is quite challengfull and bit tougher than other downs or places.
And 221, 101, 102 and 96 of S Gavaskar were against tough bowling attack and under dire situation { At the opening place if the opener plays 10 overs or 60 balls then it is so appreciable because the openers have to lessen the new ball’s shining and seam } and must need the high respect. Because to face the fresh and fiery bowlers is often tough . The task of the openers make the batting easier for the further coming batsmen . Yes 221 of SM Gavaskar there at Oval, England where india played drawn, missed out the victory only by 20 runs away and SM Gavaskar’s feat gone vain. If india would win that Test then the experts would rank that innings very uppish. Yes Gavaskar must stay a bit long until the target achieved but at the decisive stage Gavaskar gifted his wicket and easy looking target became tougher and scarcely india could draw the match. In that match the English captain too was faulty for slow bowling rate but it is a hidden or exposure factor but it played a big role .But no doubt Sunny’s 221 was remarkable knock against top class bowling attack, overseas venue and spectators , pressured hostile circumstances. And against one of the most strategic and wisest captains. If india would win there, if Gavaskar would stay for 15 minutes more then it was sure that he would add 20 or 25 more runs in his account and in that case his score tally would read 221+25= 246 .
So for 25 plus runs his innings would be counted supreme because of the triumph norms and points’ slate system. We can say he was not destined to award that victory but what he showed can’t be underestimated only due to not win. Sometimes saving the match is rather good than to lose the match or can be said is also be a great job.

101 vs England under pressurized condition because Gavaskar was in off form what he showed in his 1st tour and after that he couldn’t show phenomenal performance and he was struggling for the runs and at that stage he showed mettle against fiery,stingy swing bowling attack and unfriendly batting pitch. So in my mirror his that innings rests 2nd. SM Gavaskar’s 102 in Port Of Spain where india achieved a herculean challenge. Yes the highest target of Test cricket history 404 run in the 4th innings . At first Sunil Gavaskar fonded the stone of victory by making rock solid 102 run and then GR Vishwanath led to the victory by making marvellous 114 run but it was Mohinder Amarnath who anchored by facing more than 400 balls and made 85 precious runs showing solidity with great courage and made History for the indian Cricket and we feel glory ever to have it. So these three innings yes 102, 85, 114 of Gavaskar,Mohinder and Wishwnath respectfully are equally great in my sense.

Gavaskar’s 96 against Pakistan there at Bengaluru was tremendous compact innings where he stayed like rock against quality spinners on the severe turning wicket where it was very difficult to stay on the crease . The closing fielding settlement by Imran Khan who is known for his great leadership quality and complicated strategy too pressurised and the umpires were in too much pressure to adjudge and a micro mistake could send the batsman to pavilion but Gavaskar showed his great and sound class, technique, temperament and tampo and almost put india in a driver seat to get win but after losing his wicket Pak snatched out the victory from the india’s jaw that was so marginal too.

Now I discuss the innings of Sachin Tendulkar that he played against arch rival Pakistan’s formidable bowling attack though batting track was not dangerous but batting condition was not favourable or can say very hostile because india had to get the target in the fourth innings and to get the set target at the fourth innings is always tougher because of the nature of the wicket . At one end Sachin was constant as the lode star but at the other end wickets were fallen in regular intervals. But Sachin anchored singlehandedly but just before he got out india just needed 18 runs. And India lost the match by mere 12 runs. But Sachin’s mettle at the right time that worried opponent because he was rooted as the banyan on the crease. But pressure and illluck played its role.

Then we attend the 114 run’s innings of GR Wishwanath that he made against dangerous Lille-Pasco duo at MCC , Melbourne, Australia in the 1st innings , in which india registered a great victory . Though GR Wishwanath’ s innings was not under pressure but it is sure that it was against the meritorious , awesome bowling attack and he was only the batsman who remained axis of the run in the 1st innings. Australia in reply made mammoth score and india had to reduce a great lead in its 2nd innings that was about 182 run . India team was in trouble versus Greg Chappal’s and company because it was trailing in the 3 test matches series by 0-1. But Gavaskar led with the front and played solid innings of 70 run and woefully given out LBW against D Lille when india was 165 for no loss and looking in very much control and comfortable condition and the Australians were looking so desperate to have that big partnership at the opening slot. But abruptly umpires misadjusted Sunil Gavaskar as LBW but alas there was no DRS. Though Sunny objected sternly by reacting the decision by saying it was inside bat. Lille rushed and pointed at the pad . But umpires’ decision was the final and for reacting indisciplinary action is taken but no action was taken against SM Gavasakar because Gavaskar’s reputation was high in that sense . If he would out he didn’t await umpires’ finger and used to leave the crease reluctantly . So umpire was also felt his mistake so no complaint made or lodged against Gavaskar’s reaction or behaviour. The tragic and hot episode it was but story is that ultimately the batsman had to depart and Gavaskar’s decision didn’t alter. In that innings Chetan Chouhan the opening partner of Sunny also played heroically and made brilliant 85 run. Indeed there was fatal bowling attack of the opposition and that innings 70 & 85 respectively deserve great place in the history of cricket but alas there was and is no buzz of it. The real architect of that victory were S Gavaskar and Chetan Chouhan not GR Vishwanath because india was batting first and situation was not as dire as it was in the 2nd innings. So in my mirror both the innings deserve the rank of great innings.

Now among ten best innings 8 have been evaluated and two rest ones are 146 117 i.e. of R Dravid and M Amarnath Mr reliable Rahul Dravid. At Oval he opened innings with V Sehwag and played rocking innings and remained not out by making fabulous 146 run and honoured as carrying the bat. There ball was swinging awesomely and one sided wickets were being fallen regularly.
In that innings Rahul Dravid played so determinely and proved his pen name that he gained as mr Reliable and the Wall. And then M Amarnath ‘s brave hearted 117 at Port Of Spain, W I both the innings gain more weightage because both have played overseas where for the host batting is hell ever. And to keep same mettle and class there on the foreign soil is difficult so both the innings deserve high rate in my eloboration.

But these are only ten best innings and India’s best Test no. 1 rank innings 281 of VVS Laxman isn’t comprised in my best ones’ list . Why because follow on was asked for india by Australia . So when india twice to bat continuously to reduce huge lead the Aussies bowlers were dogged tired and the climate was hot and humidity was high in the atmosphere perticularly for the whites so Australian bowlers couldn’t bowl at their stingy approach. In that episode skipper S Waugh’s decision also played a worst role that he invited india for followe on. S Waugh had to know that he and his team was playing in India not in Australia.
We know a bitter truth in this regard that due to sheer heat climate great Denis Lillee denied for the india tour. The reputation of VVS Laxman was not so high at that time so VVS Laxman was not in pressure to perform highly because the biggies batsmen were got failure in the 1st innings . So VVS Laxman played so frankly and the runs came in his way and will. At the 2nd end Rahul Dravid played the anchoring role like tortoise steadily and VVS Laxman was freed to play his natural strokes without pressure because india was following on and the match was looking beyond the reach of india. Though his stroke play ability stunned the Aussies bowlers and they got frustrated. In that innings great . G McGrath was not fit fully and due to severe humidity to bowl was very tough and in the 2st innings he was responsible for india’s batting debacle so he bowled in intervals by resting in pavilion partly . Shane Warne was played as a club spinner by VVS Laxman and his impact was zero there in that innungs. J Gillepsy was good speedy bowler but depressed in lack of prior company at the other end or absence of Mecgrath and G Kasprorivich was an ordinary medium pacer bowler so he was made toy by VVS Laxman.
But I do say it was a great innings but not the greatest in my universal minute query and study.

I put Vijay Hazare ‘s 145 runs innings very high that he played against grear Don Bradman and company far ahead to these all. Because at that time batting condition wasn’t in comfort zone like today and there was emphatic and effective bowling line up the rival had . The real boss of batting field Don Bradman himself plundered his praise for Vijay Hazare’s great batting command and said V Hazare is an accomplished batsman who toured Australia.
Though I have not put mr Vijay Hazare’s that innings in the rank list .
But to justify with those kinds of maestros and their great innings I have chosen a new idea. Yes see—

{ Though I have ranked some innings in the merit list but some ones have left but the history knows that those innings are great in many senses.

Though It is very coplexive subject to decide greatness of any field because the time and situation can’t be review totally.
If i put great example in this subject that a great Shehnai player meastro Bismilla Khan who been once asked to join America’s University permanently but he refused the worthy invitation by saying mildly that you can available all facility but not the great Ganges and its Ghats and great spiritual atmosphere so i could not justify with my art and skill there. Here i mean to stress out that the conditions play its big role.
So the innings which have played against Four Fearsome giants of the West Indies { M Holding, A Roberts , G Garner, M Marshall }

And these innings must be rated high because those were played against superb bowling attack of all time great lethal speedsters and so stingy ones too. To stay against them on a fast pitch without helmet or helmet was awesome or not an easy task but these batsmen did not stay but made runs too to show recklessness or boldness in theire way.
In the decade of 70s & 80s the batting average up to 30 was better and 40 was very best and 45 was superb and 50 was extraordinary or was rare because there were great bowlers all around like Imran, Sarfaraz, M Holding, M Marshell, G Garner,C Croft, A Roberts, I Bothom, M Hendric, J Price, J Snow, B Willis, P Lever,J Lever , Jeoff Thompson, D Lillee, L Pasco, B Reid, Merve Huge, McDermott R Hadlee, I Chattfield ,W Benjamin, Daniel, W Clarck ,etc. And before 60s to start of the game 1877 the batting average up 25 to 30 was considered as the best . But in 90s to 2k the average increased and 50 became common and 55 plus best .Though at that era there were great bowlers like W Akram ,W Yunus, I Bishop ,P Peterson ,S Flamming , C Ambros ,W Wals , C Waas , S Bond C McGrath , J Gilepsy and against them the batsmen ever used the protective gear and against them batting average of them was remained moderate because these bowling giants are known for thrifty economy. But totally the bowling strength remained moderate because of supporting bowlers so batsmen looted runs against them.
And after 2K the batting average soared and soared and 50 plus gets common . So average is not the matter at all. With the time game improved due to modern resources . So sometimes it justifies and sometimes not.
Here your must have to look all factors and to have one sight view can’t justify. Due to improved and covered pitches ,shorter boundary lines, DRS , neuter umpiring , protective gears and apparatuses , stroky bat , limitation of bouncers and field restriction , perfect site screen and utmost commercialization are the factors to mind when the greatness is measured. And to measure someone’s height needs to see the quality of bowling , getting chances or missing chances , the opposite captain’s cadre and his strategy, the situation and pitch condition, home or abroad ground , spectators and their mood and some hidden factors . To have all these factors the expert must have to observe all closely and by prior analysis and synthesis must decide the greatness that you can say undisputed evaluation and the champ or great is indeed great.
Ultimately if I have to select only 10 best Test innings that waged a lot and essence comes as following—

In above ranking I have put defeat and win aside and count only the innings’ nature and level.Here in the rank the fans and cricket fraternity can be stunned by watching the name of Balvinder Sandhu at number 10th because he was fundamentally the bowler even not an all rounder like Kapil but he played fearless innings against dangerous bowling attack of WI. So in my sense that 68 run’s innings that hasn’t been attended so far there at overseas indeed so applaudable.

And the following five innings are too great in my merit list if 15 best ones have to give priority and is extended rank up to 15 best ones then the merit is like as the following—

My divine evaluation to borrow an Angel’s bosom—
If God is here to decide the merit then all is genuine here to measure the greatness. Here I have God’s representation reviewing all close glances through to have wordly hawk and vulture eyes’ and claws’ . Some truest fans of cricket like only transparent mirror and milk is milk and water is water for them . I know many big and good innings have been left but for the merit point of view we need to minimize the list that may be top 5 ,10,15 ,20,30,50 or 100.
To decide worthy innings it is not necessary that the innings would be vast only . See 401 of B Lara is a giant innings but futile and not listed in the best 100 but his 153 is ranked 1st . And see india’s concern Ajit Wadekar’s 48 and 45,
Deelip SirDesai’s 54 and 40 , E Solkar’s 44 and G Vishwanath ‘s 33 and 59 and 28 vs England.
And Dilip Sardesai’s marvellous 112 ,Gavaskar’s 65 and 67 ,E Solkar’ s 55 and Ashok Mankad’s 44 were so precious innings despite small ( except D Sardesai’s 112) because those innings led india to the Test win and series victory over WI in West Indies and scripted History for india. These are the small innings but played in the pressure and hostile circumstances that awarded india the series victories so despite short innings no doubt so extravaganz or costliest if measure closely and honestly . And those innings were against quality bowling too.

Mr Steve Ferrier has presented his all time 100 best Test innings of the World Cricket with rank deciding his own norms .
He has fixed his own scales but the rank is found disputed and many cricket fans aren’t satisfied to it because there are many grievances in it. Batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar and Viv Richards’ any innings hasn’t found place in 100 best ones innings . It stuns the fans and have pointed derogatory and partiality in it. And even J Hobbs , H Stucliff, P May , K Berrington like batting legends or maestros’ any innings hasn’t found place in the top 100 innings. So the list isn’t justified and it is unjustifiable . But okey each expert has its own stand and criteria and i already said it is very difficult to justify with every one. To justify with all batting masters and their innings need to rank by goving points and percentage and should make top Ten Best Test Innings under it at number one the analyst ten, twenty,30,40 or fifty and can’t justify up 50 then it can be extended up to 100. I mean 100 best innings can be measured as the number one and such as for number 2,3,4…..10. Because since the dawn of the game there are more then 1500 marvellous,dazzling,
