Bowlers’ Rating by ICC Not tells Reality
Bowlers’ Rating is just a matter not fully justifying
( On SM Gavaskar & Virender Sehwag’s Comparison on statistical base by Arunabh Sengupta and Abhishek Mukharji who have clarified the myth that V Sehwag performed against a weak bowling attack isn’t true.)

Yeah first of all before discussing indian cricket and its fans are proud to be have two great openers of their generation that masters are SM Gavaskar & Virender Sehwag. Both have phenomenal height as the Test opener. The fans of all generations like comparison. And here the comparison between two greats of the game creating much sensation among the fans. In the credit of V Sehwag I say for him is a great thing that he has got high stature that he is compared to one of all time great openers SM Gavaskar..It’s a big previlage and honour to Sehwag . Yes the next point is that the article writers by putting score statistics and on bowlers’ rating measured by the ICC on certained norms. Under this peep V Sehwag rests higher than SM Gavaskar and this fact can’t be digest by any a Gavaskar’s fans particularly like me. Yes some big knocks of V Sehwag came against high rated bowlers who have point 799 to 850 and above 850 are supernatural figures of bowling arena or simply say them the highest ranked bowlers. Yes V Sehwag ‘s has two triple on his name and one 294 . I have witnessed his those innings and on YouTube the worthy clips are available. First I talk about his mammoth 309 against Pakistan at Multan. There the bowling attack of Pakistan was Shoyab Akhtar, Mohmmad Sami , Saqlen Mustak, S Afridi . In these four bowlers S Akhtar had big name at that period. But you enter in the ground with such a great prestige but there you start with zero and you have to prove your high image there as a bowler. Soyab Akhtar bowled well and created two catching chances for the fielders but alas couldn’t endorse out the big opportunity and V Sehwag excelled that with thanking destiny. When the chances came at that time Sehwag was under 50.It means before 50 he got two full chances couple of half chances. Thus Shoyab Akhtar proven his superiority as a class and fiery bowler. Other site his supporting paceman M Sami was an ordinary bowler. Yes Saquelen Mustaq was a quality bowler but on that day was not impactive. So what about points and rate of that particular day. After two drops S Akhtar got frustrated and his bowling affected bitterly.
Now talk about his 319 there on home soil against South Africa. Yeah if glimpse out over S African bowling attack the then terrific on the paper. Yeah there was Dyn Sten and Morney Mockel one of the awesome speedster’s duo. With them the medium pacers Makhaya Natini and Jacques Kollis
And an ordinary spinner Paul Harris. There was no strategy , no sincerity ,no line no length no sharpness . There was humidity and for the S African white duo pacers it was too much and unbearable so lost out the sharpness. There was no good fielding and prior field settlement. They didn’t take V Sehwag seriously. Though ball was remained in air many a time but no fielder could convert that into the catch like Johny Rodds. The captaincy of Smith was ordinary. His team had made over 550 runs so not serious about india’s reply. At the beginning he didn’t try to trap Jafer-Sehwag pair. The wicket was almost dead and there was nothing for the pacers so the rival was frustrated.
Though Dale Styne and Morney Mockel bowled as per their reputation but couldn’t make V Sehwag out. Dale Styn bowled 32 overs and took 4 wickets by keeping run economy of 3.21 spending 103 runs. M Ntini was so expensive his economy was 4.57 , he bowled away 28 overs and cost 128 runs by taking 3 wickets . Morney Morkel was remained thrifty in comparison of his compatriot bowlers but remained wicketless.
Morney bowled 25 overs spent out 76 runs by keeping 3.04 economy .
The fourth bower was all-rounder J Kallis but he too remained extravaganz . He bowled away 14 overs and too remained wicketless. He paid 71 runs and was so expensive. His economy was 5.07 .
P Harris was the lone spinner but remained more expensive though took 3 wickets on 201 runs’ cost . He bowled a marathon spell of 53.1 overs by keeping 3.81 economic rate. S Africa tried A Prince the opener as a bowler . He bowled 3 overs and remained unimpressive by spending 16 for none. So what about bowling Rating means here. So it is like a 99 % marks achiever at the academic level and 33%marks holder are the same when they participate or sit in any competitive examination. And if 99% holder do get 40 % in that combat what about his high percentage . So the rating must be count on the performance of the particular day’s achievement. And it’s vivid that 9n that days the 850 plus rating the outstanding ones were zero or below the performance so their high reputation must not be counted . Yes if they did bowl there with their potential and made batsman struggling then their extraordinary rating must be counted otherwise he should be counted as an ordinary bowler below 450 point.
But Shoyab Akhtar who created two big chances to make V Sehwag out so must be counted rarest and 850 plus rating bowler . But D Styn, M Morkel remained unimpressive so in that particular day he must be considered below par I mean 450 rate an average bowler.
*Shoyab Akhtar bowling analysis-
32 overs 119 runs
Economy 3.71
Wicket 0
*Mohammad Sami-
34 overs 110 Runs
Economy 3.23 wicket 2
*Shabbir Ahamad
31 overs 122 runs
Economy 3.93 wicket 1
*Saquelen Mustaq-
43 overs
Consumed runs 204 Economy 4.74
Wicket 1
Abdul Razzaq
15 overs 61 runs economy 4.74
Wicket 0
Imran Farhat –
6.5 overs 31 runs
4.53 economy
1 wicket
So team Pakistan introduced or used 6 bowlers at all.
Now we talk on their rating
Shoyab Akhtar before entering in the field he was 850 plus rated bowler . It means with the extraordinary image and at the beginning he proved his class but due to the fielders’ folly couldn’t credit the precious wicket of V Sehwag who made vast 319 runs.
So we can’t blame S Akhtar because he showed his calibre / caliber and due to the fielders’ failure failure stuck on his worthy name. No doubt due to drop chances his bowling afdected due to frustration but he was not ordinary but
extraordinary bowler and through out the innings he bowled away 32 marathon overs. And he consumed out 119 runs and remained wicketless is in the question. He bowled with new ball twice and alas in the 2nd spell he couldn’t create out the spell. If you are really a warrior and miss out the blow of sword or miss out the aim you try again with double power and stinginess to kill the foe and if not the enemy gets over the game by killing you. Such thing did happen with S Akhtar. He did not need to get frustrate and needed to bowl with greater phenomena or stingy spirit . And it’s cleared that he didn’t so punished and couldn’t get a single wicket in 32 overs and plundered out 119 runs in it. Other bowlers were not of his class so we can’t point out . One another point to be marked that at the non striker end there was the Don of cricket and the captain and the bowlers focussed out all their strength and attention to make him out. Yeah it was Sachin Tendulkar who remained not out on 195 and declaring by the captain R Dravid missed out a double ton. For it the goose was criticized but at that time the question was of time and not the question of individual achievement but the question of team’s victory. So it’s clear that Shoyab Akhtar couldn’t bowl as per his high rated cadre so V Sehwag couldn’t be evaluated higher here than SM Gavaskar as mr Sengupta & Mukharji mentioned in their discussion or scenario.
Okay now I put my logic on V Sehwag’ s 293. At the crucial stage Sehwag didn’t play Muralidharan on the merit base shot and got caught and bowled by M Muralidharan. Thus he missed the history and for he would have cursed himself out the then.
Yes to estimate the weight of that 293 runs we see the bowling attack and bowling analysis of the team Shree Lanka.
Yeah !
U Welagedara 30 overs run 131 economy 4.36
wicket 1
K Kulashekhara overs 20 runs 105
Economy5.25 wicket 1
R Herrath 53.3 overe runs 240 economy 4.48
Wicket 3
M Muralidharan
51overs 195runs
3.82 economy
Wicket 4
*A Matthews 6 overs
36 runs 6.00 economy
Wicket -0
*T Dilshan 4 overs
16 runs
Economy 5.33
Wicket 0
See who bowler could bowl as per his ICC rate.
Among these six bowlers M Muralidharan and R Herrath were great bowlers. But at that period R Herrath was recruit or rookie and about to testing or under proven. After retirement of Muralidharan the great R Herrath became the leading bowler of Shri Lanka as the spinner.
Other bowlers Welegedera and Kulashekhara were the pacers but of an ordinary class. So the economy of M Muralidharan was 3.82 and R Herrath’s 4.48
So by observing the economy R Herrarh rests very ordinary. And M Muralidharan ordinary. Why …..because indian wickets are known for spin or turning . Indian bowlers could bowl well but the Shri Lankan couldn’t so rate they acquired as an average bowler in that particular match.
So as the conclusion I do stress and refute the demon base or way of rating. As a batsman and bowler when he entered into the ground yes with high stature….likes the great example of Sir Donald Bradman. Yes in his last Test innings he got out on duck. The question is how many points would cut off from the points he acquired before this match. Such as Shoyab Akhtar who remained wicketless in the Multan Test and been played by Sehwag like a child or toy while before the match he was very high rated giant bowler.
Yes, as a batsman V Sehwag was not great but great why not great because if his fans throng to watch or enjoy his great explosive innings but it’s not sure that he would fulfill his fans. Why because hitting intentionally was his religion and for that he required the certain luck and particular day. He was a lower or middle order batsman and it was S Ganguly who promoted or asked to play as an opener as a gamble and that gamble played it role and a grand successful episode is before us. He has 23 hundreds on his prodigy. And six double and 2 triple on his virtuous name. If we talk about same standard batsmen then S Jayasuriya, T Dilshan in the Test and Sachin, Adem Gilchrist , S Afridi in ODIs played as the opener despite not specialist opening batsman. But as the opener the became avatar and prospered the game on their handy hands. Yes Chris Gayle started his batting career as a specialist opening batsman. Santan Jayasuriya has a triple hundred knock on his name but it is just a figure and of particular day or match. Overall he doesn’t stand as a big Test batsman. Sachin Tendulkar hasn’t any triple century knock on his name but he is rated high and the people of Sir Don”s nation showered so much accolades and let him greater than Don by voting. Sunil Gavaskar was a genuine specific opener and there is no comparison of V Sehwag with Sunny. When it is Test match where there is sufficient time to play and there play in the instance way isn’t intelligence. We know Saiyyad Mustaq Ali was a big opener but awarded his wickets only due to unwanting aggression. Yes when you need aggression you need to show. And it is sure despite high rated bowler rank S Akhtar, Dale Styn, Morney Mockel, Jimmi Anderson, S Broad, Pet Commons, M Stark, M Johnson, M Natini , Gylepsi all are not the bowler of that class like M Holding, M Marshall, G Garner, A Roberts, W Hall, C Griffith, A Davidson , J Miller , H Larwood ,F Tyson, D Lillee ,J Thompson, L Pasco, McDermott, J Price, J Snow, B Willis, R Hadlee, Imran Khan, Waqar Yunus , W Akaran, A Donald , C Ambros , C Walsh, I Bishop , C Croft Shane Bond , F Truman.
No , never , in the 2K only one bowler who reached sky height who can be out in the elite group. That is one and only G McGrath and when all time World Eleven is discussed the experts fall in dilemma. So there is no comparison can be made. V Sehwag wasn’t the leading batsman of the team. The team was illuminated with greatest Sachin , Dravid , VVS Laxman and S Ganguly so V Sehwag could play boldly and without responsibility. In case of out cheaply there was a big bench to recover or handle the situation. But in the time of Gavaskar the situation was different and all the batting bulk was on the shoulders of Gavaskar. And at that time rivals were solid. At that time each team had one top class bowler not to have point or rate system but in real so fatal that no team could stop falling wickets one end.
But I salute V Sehwag’s passion to hit the ball and count as one of the most destructive batsmen and often compare with Viv Richards. But if we see the Test strike rate of Kapil Dev is as same as Virender Sehwag. He too has 8 Test hundred on his name and over 5000 Test runs but not be said a genuine batsman but just an entertainer.
So hitting isn’t matter in the Test Cricket . If you make intention to hit this or that ball then you just need to swing the bat if gets contact to the ball it’s sure can gain a four a or six. And hitting you as a bowler do not use your brain you are punished. And there are intelligent and instincy bowler then it sure getting runs and sparing wicket is not easy. And to see the nature ,style , temperament, technique Virender Sehwag wouldn’t as impactive as he remained in his era. He was lucky that he faced the paper lion, no real lions. But for it we can’t curse him. Yes , he faced what the rivals had. See under Virat Kohli india made history by winning the 1st Test series there in Australia and instead of given credit many conservative fans and critics did not give much importance to that series victory. Why … because two leading batsmen of their team were not in the action due to ball tampering scam and suffering blame. And they were under a very average captained who wasn’t ideal and couldn’t lead with the front. We know the Team Australia defeated with slight or moderate margin and there were no big name in the team as a batsman. All were under trial or supporting not leading so those two giants S Smith and D Warner would be key . And despite an average team due to their bowling they won a test match put india into a questionnaire that your batting was not up to that level. With the bat C Pujara showed the mattle and he was the main architect of the indian team’s series victory. In that series Virat couldn’t show morale with the bat. But he was destined to win the series. About the rival it was said by great Gavaskar favouring india that what was served they eat . For that the team india isn’t guilty. He meant that india team player against what team was presented by their board. So there are the chances of ifs & buts but what is before us as result must be accepted.
Before say bye to this discourse I as an indian and a great lover of the game feel proud that india have two big openers who are respected for their phenomenal batting height .
