Indian cricket has produced many great batting legends but among them some ones buzzed a lot due to their great game and achievements. Since 1932 when india stepped
in there at the Lords as the Test nation against England under colonel CK Naydu with it the golden episode started and India have seen many greats like Lala Amarnath, Vijay Merchant, Mustaq Ali, Vijay Hazare, Polly Umrigar, Vijay Manjrekar ,Dilip Sardesai, Nawab Pataudi, GR Vishvanath, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, Dilip Vengserkar, M Azharuddin, Navjot Siddhu , Sachin Tendulkar, Sourabh Ganguly ,Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag ,VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli ,C Pujara and all are considered the remarkable figures of batting arena. If we talk about these batsmen all are great and Sunil Gavaskar , Sachin Tendulkar ,Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohl got high international fame and mesmerized the cricket world and whenever the all time great eleven is discussed by the critics, experts, veterans, commentators , umpires ,sports and game media persons and real or conservative fans of the game yes the names of Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar are discussed by them for all time great world Eleven and most of them give both’s batsmen name in it. And can say unarguably both are accepted as one of the greatest batsmen of the Test cricket battlefield. Yeah disputed or undisputed is a different discussive point because there are many ifs and buts the fans ,experts , statisticians , critics have to have this point but sure both are one of the greatest batting figures of Test arena. And if the discussion is made to measure ten bestest batsmen ‘s of india then the rank list would be rested as — 1. SM Gavaskar 2. Sachin Tendulkar 3. Vijay Hazare 4. Vijay Merchant 5. Yes this is the list which comprised 10 best batsmen of Indian Test Field according to my evaluation.
Batsman like M Azharuddin, Navjot Singh Siddhu, Sourabh Ganguly and aren’t got place in my concern because no one is unique in figures as per my close look. Yeah Virat Kohli is the figure who has got phenomenal height at the stage what he has played so far. No need to prove his greatness if he gets retired at this stage but according to my mettle Virat isn’t rest angel. So Virat Kohli hasn’t been placed by me and he is in tjr action and his career hasn’t ended yet though he has proven his height at this journey but the question would he finish his career with such height at the end like Sachin. Though Sachin too struggle at twilight of his career to get 100 th international 100.
In the top ten batsmen list Dilip Vengserkar has been ranked at number 8th though once his name buzzed and balazed a lot despite the gods presence Gavasker–Vishwanath, Mohinder Amarnath particularly his big performance against England in England and in India versus the West Indies. But his shine was eclipsed by the dazzling heat of Sunil Gavaskar. And in this aspect we know in dazzling presence of the Sun there is no importance of the moon and Dilip Vengserkar’s illumination
been shaded due to the sun Sunil Gavaskar or can say the star was present in the sky but due to the sunlight didn”t seem. Due to Sunny’s giant status Dilip Vengeserkar’s performance wasn’t draw greater attraction and attention. And consistency point of view his performance didn’t remained in focuss such as Virender Sehwag. But technical point of view D Vengserkar was sound and Virender a erred . Mohammad Azharuddin begun his career as a wonder boy when he hit out three centuries in a raw against England. But due to trapped in the fixing scam his performance remained in doubt and decked . Despite irregular performance Azhar remained the captain of India was amazing. Though it’s not raval but might be the goons’ game was behind that that the board of control would in a helpless condition and compelled to keep Azhar as the captain despite inconsistent performance. Azhar accepted his offence publicly so behind his performance something could be wrong and despite his big record just equal to great VVS Laxman my conscience did not allow to put him in the list of greats . So by excusing genuinely I overlook his name.This episode is a black stain on indian cricket. Despite average performance Azhar was kept the indian team’s captain . During Azharuddin era the maximum rivals were unmatched and so the record must be upper but no maternal uncle and have as one-eyed maternal uncle is considered great or something is better than nothing in M Azhar’ s concerned . Azhar has 22 hundred on his name and not a single inning has bigger height like V Sehwag and VVS Laxman’s mammoth innings. When behind won and lose the mafia and Don had role then can’t be deny the role behind his scores and out modes.
So I am sorry not to include M Azharuddin in my top ten ranking list.
At the beginning period or episodes Vijay Hazare and Vijay Merchant left international footmarks by their phenomenal batting cadre. British and Australian showered their praise on both the batting masters . On Vijay Hazare world ‘s cricket ‘s real God Don Bradman showered a great appreciation by saying Vijay Hazare is one of the complete batsmen who have toured Australia. Vijay Merchant got to such image equal to J Hobbs and L Hutton and a British cricketer said let paint him white and bring for Australia tour as the opening batsman to face Australian pace.
Despite very short career both have remarkable place in batting history of india. Then Polly Umrigar, Vijay Manjrekar, Nawab Pataudi ,Dilip Sardesai shone but like comet. And then india got GR Vishwanath the first little master of india. And he showed the class and got fame as master batter. Though GR Vishvanath’s batting figures aren’t huge like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Dravid and V Kohli but figured away he has good name as an Indian batsman. On of the fastest and fearsome speedsters of Test arena M Holding praised Vishi’s style and compactness. Vishi has 14 hundred on his worthy name and his most of the hundreds accredited for india’s victory in the Test arena. So by the critics and statisticians his name is counted bigger as the batsman. Vishi’s gentleness is often remembered for the a famous episode when the golden jubilee Test of Indian History is reminded. Yes with GR Vishwanath, Mohinder Amarnath is also taken as a biggie but after him Dilip Vengserkar emerged as a big batsman. But at beginning he did take time and gradually advanced uppish. D Vengesarkar ‘s performance there in England remained remarkable where the batting is always challengeable because of its hostile climatic conditions and wicket . He is considered as the emperor of Lords because of his three marvellous centuries on this Macca of cricket . Batsman like Sunny , Wishi and Jimi’s prodigious presence and their failure he dazzled and blazed with the bat in the Historic ground where making century is the dream of every cricketer batsman. Many great batsmen couldn’t make century there so D Vengserkar’s three centuries are considered unique achievement. But it is well said where there is the Son, the Moon ,the Lode star and stars haven’t much importance. And such things happened with the colonel D Vengserkar. One of the most fiery bowler of era M Holding named him the toughest batsman to bowl. When the ICC started ranking system then D Vengserkar got the 1st place in the slate despite big batsmen’s presence in the world cricket . Yes C Llyod ,A Kalicharan ,D Hayans, G Grinidge from the West Indies , Greg Chappal and ,Dough Walters, A Border ,Kim Huge ,G Yellop from Australia, M Crow , J Right , J Reid, J Hawarth from New Zealand, Zahir Abbas ,J Miandad from Pakistan, J Boycott, D Amiss, D Gower, G Gooch, A Lamb ,M Getting from England, Dilip Mendis,A Desilva from S Lanka were the big names in comparison but Dilip Vengserkar was adjudged number one batsman in the annaxture for his phenomenal performance. Sunil Gavaskar like batsman’s figures are very poor in England while Dilip Vengeserkar’s performance remained good than Gavaskar , Vishwanath and M Amarnath.
Dilip Vengeserkar got the nick name Colonel because at the Ranji Trophy India ‘s biggest domestic platform to measure class and quality and the base to select at the national level. In it Dilip Vengeserkar smashed out number of big sixes like India ‘s 1st skipper and aggressive bats colonel CK Nayadu who was known the then as the sixer king so acquired the name colonel by the critic on the name of that great personality of indian dawn.
I had read an article that mentioned D Vengeskar as the Link between SM Gavaskar to SR Tendulkar. Ultimately I conclude by saying that sometimes the figures do not tell real story but alas it is only the base to measure greatness and rank. And sometimes huge figures also do not reveal the real story. Yes in this regard L Messi a great footballer but still the goal and victory of his team awaited to measure him a greatest because in Fifa Cup he hasn’t got that success which was gained by Pele and Meradona.
But it’s great achievement for D Vengserkar’s career that put him high and
compells critics to consider him great.
