The Evaluation isn’t fair !”
” This evaluation isn’t fair”
( On the 10 bestest innings by the indian batsmen that is observed by me in Worthy Google interpreted by a senior sports editor mr. Natrajan)
I read out the estimation of the greatest Test Match innings from indian batting field and observed out the rank which is evaluated by a sports editor mr Natrajan. In it I found the ranking list of top ten innings played by the indian batting meastros that is Dilip Vengserkar at number 10th ,GR Wishwnath at 9th ,VVS Laxman 8th ,Sachin Tendulkar 7th ,Virender Sehwag 6th, GGambhir 5th ,Sachin Tendulkar 4th, SM Gavaskar 3rd, Rahul Dravid 2nd and VVS Laxman the 1st. Thus VVS Laxman rest two times in the rank list and Sachin Tendulkar also placed two times .
And VVS Luksman’s knock of 281 is given 1st rank then Rahul David’s 180 considered 2 nd and Sunny Gavaskar’s 96 against Pak the knock 3rd and his 221 against England is not rest or given place by the expert but being a big fan, critic , commentator ,sports writer and cricketer of my level
I feel that the list isn’t fair
and by using their own norms to decide the best Test innings is disputed. It isn’t justified with some greatest innings.
Due have this list I am not satisfied to have some prior ,micro and inspected points .
*Comparison of Sunny Gavaskar’s 221agaist England in Oval cricket ground and 281 of VVS Laxman against Australia in Kolkata.
Laxman ‘s innings is considered the ranked first why ? Because due to his innings India registered the victory and here the victory is made the major measurement for evaluate the greatest innings but by minute observance the point is to mind that behind that victory the bowler Harbhajan was accredited and Rahul Dravid’s silent in buzzed innings of 180 was mattered too. If I make count some point that the innings which was played by VVS Laxman was under unpressurized condition because after getting follow on india was played only to survive an innings defeat or the match and after dismissal of greats likes Sachin , Ganguly there was no hope of survival and VVS Laxman n R Dravid played without pressure and india receded or conceded the lead and gained lead of 260 but in the 4 th innings it was tougher and Aussies’ weaknesses to face spin bowling exposed or ravelled completely and after 16 consecutive triumphs Australia tasted bitter defeat kneeling down against Harbhajan who took 13 wickets.
So when biggies like Sachin , S Gangualy get out then the number 4 th down batsman isn’t in the pressure and could play all freely . And such thing does happen with Laxman and he could play a big innings of 281.
In this context. The Australians were careless and overconfident and bit fatigue and they had big lead so set up non defensive field and they had limited bowling option because their spearhead McGrath was not fit fully in the 2nd innings though bowled out 39 overs and took 2 worthy wickets including VVS Laxman so quality was absent at the critical stage and Jesen Gilepsi had Kosprovich as the third pacer but not as effective as McGrath n Gillespie and Shane Warne Who remained a fear and fobia never been a threatened on the Indian soil and remained costlier. If compares Sunil Gavaskar’s 221epuc knock that played in England is more impressive and effective why because it was played in a under pressure circumstances and Sunny’s status as a batsman was not greater but greatest and as an opener it’s difficult to face the fresh and energetic bowling attack and being the leading most batsman and the opener who has to lift up responsibility single handedly because there was solid bating line up at that period likes the time of Laxman. And it was the highest target to achieve or survive. Comparatively the bowling attack was much stronger and highly reputed because Bob Willis, Ian Bothom, Dilly and M Hendricks has a big place in the bowling arena than the bowlers of that era yeah they had great Glen McGrath but in the 2nd innings he was unfitted and he bowled just 39 and in lack of him J Gilespy , M Wagh and Kosprovich bowled and greatest spinner S Warn never remained affective on indian soil and remained costlier and played by indian batsmen like an ordinary or club class bowler. The Oval Test was a challenge to protect by a huge defeat. At that time indian batting wasn’t formidable like 2k . At that time there was Sunil Gavaskar and GR Wiswanath only were mr dependable batsmen of global repute ,others were supplementary. Sunny Gavaskar was known for his tortoise batting and GR Wiswanath was also the batter of such nature. And in the Test it was the nature that by class and having patience need to stay on crease . But on that Sunny was in a different and classy mood and since the start he was in an aggressive tempo and got good assistance of Chetan Chouhan who played some good innings as an opener but never got century.
If there were more overs Sunny would hit triple easily because he was in a great touch, class and flow on that day. Though Hendricks didn’t bowl in the second innings who was a leading bowler but being class opener for Sunny he wasn’t a problem at the point he was playing . So conclusively in my sense Sunny’s innings of 221 is bigger than VVS Laxman’s 281
The victory remained just 20 runs short or away and for it other batsmen were responsible that they couldn’t get marginal runs after Gavaskar’s sad departure. When Gavaskar departed just 40 runs have to get and there was plenty of deliveries and 7 wickets in hand . If Sunny would stay a bit more for 20 minutes the target would be achieved moderately but it was bad luck that Sunny lost out his wicket at that crucial stage.
So critic and appreciation point of view if it is reviewed closely then Sunny Gavaskar’s 221 runs’ innings rests at number one rank and same as Sunny’s 96 runs against a severely turny and cracky track or pitch at Banglore and against quality spin bowling and fatal speedsters like Imran Khan and Wasim Akram the inning of Sunny must be placed 2nd and missing victory only by 16 run shouldn’t be underestimated. Because we are estimating greatest innings. So here we need to take genuine or transparent mirror only of batting class and quality not victory or defeat. Behind defeat what was the error of the batsman who has put you at the verge of victory or in position of possible victory. By getting defeat the importance of the batsman doesn’t lessened and if it is done its a disputed evaluation. Sunny’s 221 runs innings was played at abroad where the batting always been a challenge. Yes Sachin Tendulkar’s 136 against Pakistan at a crucial stage in Chepok, Madras is indeed a great innings and must place at number three.
Mohinder Amarnath’s 85 in the West Indies is also the great innings because against fiery bowling attack and at the deadliest track it was a brave and challenging deed. So my mathematics is different and observes real Test cricketing facts.
Ultimately I do say that each people has its own interpretation, perception and aspect and have right to express its own expression and presentation. But I am a man of different spirit and not the sheepish trend and in this respect the great poet John Milton is my ideal and rebel is my passion to have prior and unattended facts. Though following great Walter’s worthy view or statement I respect mr Natrajan and his mirror .
