I have attended this point in my previous cry particularly about Sunny Gavaskar. Test match is the real Test and the toughest traditional and fundamental format of the game cricket. If there is a quality bowling , fielding and captaincy and there are hostile circumstances and adverse pitch and climate conditions then to stay on the crease is so challenging . At that point each delivery is tougher and each run is so precious . In the easeful condition and batting wicket the batting is easy and the batsman can collect runs easily . But against quality bowlers ,fielders and wise, strategic and crafty captain it is not easy to collect runs. There even each single is challenging. Yes if you have Jonty Rodds at cover point or in off and on side and the bowler bowls with accurate direction then getting single is not easy because you have Jonty Rodds who is known for has tiger like fragility and sharpness that you cant take risk. There if you give chance to catch up to 15 yards and the ball is bit uppish to the ground then Jonty is the fielder who can convert that chance into out. Here I mean n the Test match at any down or place facing delivery is challenging. Let see the scenario of the 1st Test of Adelaide there at Australia of prestigious Border-Gavaskar Series in which India won the toss and elected to bat 1st and rookie Prathvi Shaw got out in the very 2nd ball of the Test match delivered by tall and fiery M Starc. Then C Pujara joined Mayank Agrawal who is known as mr commendable. He is a real wizard of the format and known for his compactness, tacnique , temperament. In the above picture of the Newspaper D Bhaskar the heading is Cheteshwar Pujara faced 160 ball is saying a lot about the Test match. Here he made valuable 43 runs but here the importance of runs isn’t focussed than to balls. Because the condition wasn’t easy and facing ball was a challenge by surviving the wicket. So in the Test Match how many runs you have made is a matter but how many balls you have faced also be a big matter and on that count runs as well as balls should be the criteria for measuring the greatness of any Test batsman . And most appealing and striking fact is that at the beginning as the opener facing the new ball is quite challenging. Often we see that how many runs the opening batsmen have made but don’t see how many deliveries they have played or faced. The 1st duty of the openers is not to make run but to protect the wicket and diminish the shine of the new ball. And to make the pitch easy because at the beginning the nature of the wicket is uncertain and unfamiliar.
But alas we the fans ,experts ,critics see the runs not the faced up balls by the openers.
So , for measuring the greatness the balls particularly for the openers must observe and count. In my previous article I have attended this issue or point in worthy regards of great Sunny Gavaskar.
Today in the Adelaide Test Australia’s two openers too couldn’t make runs and before being out accounted only 8 on their name on the scoreboard but they both have played 40 plus deliveries at the beginning and can be said ease the condition for the next coming batsmen.
